Distinguished University Professor Robert Stainton is a prominent researcher in the Department of Philosophy and the Graduate Program in Linguistics at Western University. His work spans philosophy of language, linguistics, and cognitive science, focusing on the boundary between semantics and pragmatics. He is particularly recognized for his early research on sub-sentential speech and how non-sentential utterances convey complex meanings in natural language. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was supervised by Sylvain Bromberger, Noam Chomsky and James Higginbotham. He teaches advanced seminars and introductory courses on language and philosophy and is available to discuss supervision with students interested in the philosophy of language.
