Maged Youssef is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western University and a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario. He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from McMaster University and B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Ain Shams University. Before joining Western in 2002, he practised as a Senior Structural Engineer in New York City, assessing and retrofitting existing buildings and developing modular steel building systems — experience that continues to shape his practice-oriented research and consulting.

His research addresses the safety and resilience of structures under extreme events, with internationally recognized contributions in structural fire engineering, earthquake engineering, and the use of superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) to create self-centering, damage-resistant structures. Working closely with industry partners, his group has developed patented innovations — including a mechanical SMA-to-steel rebar coupler for seismic resilience, a structural thermal break for concrete balconies, and a fire-retardant glass treatment — along with design tools supporting performance-based fire design.

Consistently ranked among the top 2% of researchers in civil engineering worldwide in Elsevier's science-wide citation rankings and named a Top Scholar by ScholarGPS, Dr. Youssef has published extensively in leading international journals, including Engineering Structures, Fire Safety Journal, and the Journal of Earthquake Engineering. He serves on ACI, CSCE, and CSA technical committees and holds editorial roles with several international journals. He is also committed to mentoring the next generation of structural engineers and has supervised dozens of graduate students to completion.
