Nurse practitioner and faculty member Wilma J. Koopman in Western University’s School of Nursing focuses on patient-centered chronic illness care, interaction work, minimally disruptive care, health encounters, and neuromuscular care. Her research examines how chronic illness care is negotiated in real clinical encounters and how practice can reduce the burden placed on patients while improving care relationships. Her research mission is to optimize chronic illness care by making patient-practitioner interactions more responsive, sustainable, and humane. Koopman also leads adult care for muscular dystrophy within the neuromuscular clinic and has received provincial recognition for leadership in clinical nursing practice.
