Associate Professor Deanna Friesen is a member of the Applied Psychology Arc in the Faculty of Education at Western University. Her research examines bilingual language development, reading comprehension, and inclusive education, investigating how bilingualism impacts cognitive and linguistic processing during word recognition, sentence processing, and text comprehension. She employs behavioural, eye-tracking, and EEG methodologies to understand what differentiates successful readers from those who struggle, with recent work focusing on individual differences in comprehension monitoring ability across diverse reader populations. Her lab has previously examined effective reading strategy use in French immersion students, English Language Learners, and monolingual readers, and continues to explore how educators utilize psychoeducational reports to support students with learning difficulties and how teachers perceive implementing Right to Read report recommendations in Ontario. She welcomes inquiries from prospective graduate students and collaborators interested in her research program.
