BIO

In Grade 8, a teacher once told me that I would likely not excel in science because I was a girl. At the time, I didn’t fully register the weight of that statement, but it stayed with me and later became a quiet source of determination. Just a few years later, I had a very different experience. In Grade 11, I chose to take a risk and enroll in a chemistry course simply because I was curious. In that classroom, I encountered a teacher who encouraged my curiosity and affirmed my ability. I quickly discovered not only that I could succeed, but that I was excelling.

Those two contrasting experiences revealed something powerful to me: teachers can fundamentally shape how students see themselves and their potential. That realization became a driving force in my own aspirations. I knew I wanted to be the kind of educator who opens doors rather than closes them.

My educational journey has been shaped by a unique context. I come from a cultural background where formal education beyond Grade 8 was often viewed as unnecessary. However, my parents made the courageous decision to challenge that norm and support my continued education. That decision profoundly influenced me. I came to understand education not as a given, but as a powerful and rare opportunity, one that could fundamentally expand possibilities.

As a first-generation university student, I approached my undergraduate studies at Western University with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility. I saw education as both a privilege and a tool for transformation. Although I initially planned to become a high school biology and chemistry teacher, I realized at the end of my degree that my intellectual curiosity and my commitment to learning were far from satisfied.

I chose to pursue graduate studies in molecular science, driven by a deep interest in genetics and biochemistry and a desire to learn in a supportive and rigorous research environment. Joining Dr. Beier’s lab proved to be a pivotal decision. It was a place where I was both challenged and encouraged, and where mentorship played a critical role in my development. With that support, I transitioned into a PhD, an opportunity I may not have envisioned for myself earlier in my journey.

Throughout my graduate training, one constant remained: my commitment to teaching. I sought out opportunities to teach from the very beginning, starting as a teaching assistant and continuously refining my approach. One of the most formative experiences was working in a second-year human physiology course, particularly because I had not previously studied physiology myself. This challenge required me not only to learn complex material quickly, but to translate it into accessible, meaningful learning for students. That experience fundamentally shaped my teaching philosophy: to meet students where they are, to demystify complexity, and to empower them to see themselves as capable learners.

Today, my work is grounded in a belief that education is transformative, and that educators play a critical role in shaping not only what students learn, but who they believe they can become. My journey, from a student once told I might not succeed to a scientist and educator, continues to inform how I teach, mentor, and advocate for inclusive and equitable learning environments.
