Liana Zanette is Professor of Biology at Western University. After completing her master’s on anti-predator behaviour in chickadees, she did her PhD in Australia on the food, predator and habitat fragmentation impacts on songbird reproduction. Returning to Canada for her postdoc, she began a series of experiments that she continued after being hired at Western demonstrating that the fear predators inspire in free-living wildlife can itself significantly reduce prey numbers and cause trophic cascades. In recent years she has conducted experiments on animals from elephants on down demonstrating that wildlife worldwide most fear the human “super predator”.
