With an MA in Musicology and an MSc in Information and Library Science, Joanne Paterson is an Associate Librarian and Research and Scholarly Communication Librarian at Western Libraries, Western University. Her work focuses on scholarly communication, open access, research visibility and impact, persistent identifiers, research information management, and digital scholarship.

Joanne has contributed to national initiatives at Library and Archives Canada and played a key role in the development of Scholarship@Western, Western Libraries’ previous institutional repository. Her current work includes supporting the implementation and ongoing development of Western’s Research Information Management System (RIMS), helping researchers manage and enhance their online research profiles, and promoting the effective use of persistent identifiers such as ORCID.

Her interests also include bibliometrics, research metadata, and the challenges of bringing together information from multiple scholarly data sources. She works with data and metadata from systems and platforms such as OpenAlex, ROR, Scopus, Web of Science, Crossref, and ORCID, with a particular interest in improving the accuracy, discoverability, and representation of research outputs and researcher identities.

Joanne’s work in digital humanities and digital scholarship explores both computational and hands-on approaches to research and teaching, including text analysis, data visualization, digital exhibits, book arts, and the connections between physical and digital making.

Beyond her work at Western, Joanne is an active musician, playing trumpet and flugelhorn in jazz and brass ensembles, including the Sounds of Swing Big Band, the Jazzabelles, an all-women jazz ensemble, and Barclay Road Brassworks. She is also an enthusiastic family historian, bringing the same interest in evidence, connections, metadata, and discovery to reconstructing the stories of people and communities from the past.
