With an MA in Musicology and an MSc in Information and Library Science, Joanne Paterson is an Associate Librarian who brings equal parts expertise and enthusiasm to everything she does. By day, she’s a Research and Scholarly Communication Librarian at Western Libraries, championing open access, digital scholarship, and persistent identifiers (ORCID, anyone?). She has contributed to national initiatives at Library and Archives Canada and played a key role in building Western Libraries Institutional Repository Scholarship@Western. Most recently, she explores bibliometric tools, supports the implementation and maintenance of the new Research Information Management System (RIMS), and helps researchers navigate all things online research profiles. She’s also a data-cleaning champion, working to tidy up aggregated metadata from platforms like OpenAlex, ROR, Scopus, and Web of Science to ensure accurate and impactful representation of research outputs. But that’s not all—when she’s off the clock, she swaps metadata for melodies as a trumpet player in jazz and brass ensembles, including Sounds of Swing Big band, The Jazzabelles ( an all-women jazz ensemble) , and the Barclay Road Brassworks.. And if she’s not making music, she’s channelling her inner detective as an amateur family historian. She’ll proudly tell you, “I see dead people,” as she pieces together her ancestors’ stories and breathes life into the past. Whether she’s visualizing research impact or a family tree, Jo is all about connecting people, ideas, and history in meaningful ways—with a bit of flair and a lot of heart.
