BIO

Distinguished University Professor Robert Hegele serves in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry at Western University. His research integrates genetics, dyslipidemia, and diabetes to understand the molecular basis of cardiovascular disease. He focuses on identifying genetic variants that influence lipid levels and the risk of premature atherosclerosis. Holding a Medical Degree from the University of Toronto, he is a scientist at the Robarts Research Institute and a Distinguished University Professor of Medicine in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western Univeristy.  His laboratory has discovered the causal genes and pathogenic DNA variants for more than 20 human disease.  In his clinic, he was among the first in the world to use seven medications that are now available for prescription to Canadian patients.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an inductee in the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.  He is on Clarivate's Highly Cited List of Scientists in all disciplines (99.9%ile).  He supervises a large team of researchers in the Blackburn Cardiovascular Genetics Lab and is currently available for doctoral mentorship and clinical research consultation.
