Professor Gary Shaw is situated in the Department of Biochemistry at Western University. His research uses chemical and physical methods to examine the three-dimensional structures, dynamics and interactions of proteins on the atomic level. He works to elucidate enzyme mechanisms, establish how genetic mutations cause protein misfolding and understand how protein functions become dysregulated that are the hallmarks of neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson's disease and ALS.  Holding a Doctor of Philosophy from McMaster University, he is a former Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Structural Neurobiology and current member of the Western Institute for Neuroscience. Dr. Shaw is the current Director of the open-access Biomolecular CORE Facility (BioCORE) at Western that comprises multiple specialized laboratories for protein production, biophysical analysis, three-dimensional structure determinatuon and biological mass spectrometry.
