Dr. Jing Jiang, Ph.D., P. Eng., has been with Western’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for 30 years and is one of the longest-serving NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chairs (IRC) in Canada in the area of instrumentation, control, and electrical systems for nuclear power plants. Jiang works closely with Canadian industries on research and development, and he has helped to train a large number of HQPs for the industry. His current research interests include fault-tolerant control of safety-critical systems, advanced control of power plants containing non-traditional energy resources, and instrumentation and control for nuclear power plants. He is a registered professional engineer (P. Eng.) in Ontario and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Jing Jiang received a Ph.D. degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1989. He has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada since 1991, where he is currently an NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair Professor. Named a Distinguished University Professor in 2018, Jiang has spearheaded several groundbreaking research and development projects, including wireless sensor networks for nuclear power applications, where the effects of ionizing radiation on electronics are examined and adequate methods for protection are developed. As one of the longest serving IRCs, Jiang has established a world-class research program on instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power plants. He works closely with Canadian nuclear organizations through the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE). His research has broken new ground in wireless sensor networks, optic fibre technologies and remote monitoring systems for small modular reactors (SMRs) — many designed for deployment in Canada’s remote north.
Internationally, he has represented Canada at the IAEA and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and contributed to engineering training missions in Vietnam and South Korea. In 2024, he was named a DAAD Research Ambassador, promoting academic exchange between Canada and Germany. In London and across Ontario, Jiang’s influence extends to community education and outreach. As Chair of the IEEE Power & Energy Society Chapter in London and former Warden of Engineer Camp 11, he has helped organize Iron Ring ceremonies and offered public talks on nuclear and renewable energy technologies. His open-lab initiatives invite school-aged children to explore real-world engineering labs, sparking early interest in STEM fields.
His innovations have led to international recognition, including his role in developing the IEC Technical Report 62918, adopted globally to guide the integration of wireless devices in nuclear safety systems. He also led an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) project on wireless technologies in nuclear applications, which culminated in the 2020 IAEA publication titled Application of Wireless Technologies in Nuclear Power Plant Instrumentation and Control Systems. Dr. Jing Jiang was appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest honour and also received an Ontario Professional Engineers Award, the Gold Medal, and was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
With over 21,700 citations, six patents and two licensed technologies, Jiang’s research extends beyond academia to shape policy, standards and practice worldwide. His impact is also measurable through $18 million in secured research funding, an h-index of 67 and eight authored books or monographs.
