Dr. Ahmed AlSayed is a civil and environmental engineer by training, with a strong interest in enhancing the sustainability and resilience of wastewater treatment systems. His work brings together biological process engineering, environmental biotechnology, and data science to tackle real-world challenges in the water sector.
Ahmed is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western University. He received his PhD and master’s degrees in civil engineering from York University, where his research focused on high-rate processes for carbon and phosphorus recovery, energy-efficient nitrogen removal, and methane biovalorization using methane-oxidizing bacteria. Following his doctoral studies, Ahmed was an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University, where he developed machine learning tools for process modelling and control, and mitigation and advanced research on quantification and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment plants.
Prior to joining Western in 2025, Ahmed contributed to several applied research projects across North America, working closely with utilities, consultants, and academic partners. These projects focused on biological wastewater treatment process intensification, data-driven modelling and process control, and GHG quantification and mitigation. Most recently, Ahmed was part of the R&D team at Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions, where he contributed to pioneering efforts in advancing water and wastewater innovation.
