Stuart A. Webb is a Professor of Applied Linguistics. He conducts studies of second language acquisition, incidental and deliberate vocabulary learning, corpus-driven studies, and applied linguistics. His research program has a primary focus on vocabulary learning and has looked at questions such as: How many words do English as a foreign language students learn per year? How many words do we need to know to understand television programs and movies? How many times do we need to encounter words during reading in order to learn them? Which words have the greatest value to learners and deserve attention in the classroom? How can we measure vocabulary learning? Dr. Webb is an associate editor for the journal Studies in Second Language Acquisition and  serves on the editorial boards of many international journals. He provides graduate supervision in studies of applied linguistics. PhD students he has supervised include Takumi Uchihara (Tohoku University), Akifumi Yanagisawa (Tsukuba University), Su Kyung Kim (Korea University), Zhouhan Jin (University of Macao), Yen Dang (Leeds University), Michael Rodgers (Carleton University), Tatsuya Nakata (Rikkyo University), and Yosuke Sasao (Kyoto University).
