Associate Professor Elysee Nouvet serves in the School of Health Studies at Western University.

She is a medical anthropologist whose research is focused on lived experiences of illness, care, and politics and practices of listening and engaging under-considered perspectives in health policy and practice.  Nouvet’s doctoral work (2011, York University) focused on the social determinants, expression, and impacts of pain and distress in a Nicaraguan shanty. Since then, she has developed and co-led research on perceptions and moral experiences of healthcare and research in several African healthcare contexts, research in public health emergencies, short-term medical missions, palliative care, and Canadian social services. with interests in histories, politics, and practices of representation in global health.

Dr. Nouvet has held external grants as PI from Wellcome Trust, R2HC/Save the Children/DFID (Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises), the World Health Organization, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research, Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and ELRHA (Enhanced Learning and Research in Humanitarian Action). She is currently co-PI on a 5-year Global Health Solidarity project funded by a Wellcome Trust Discovery grant and co-PI on the Operationalizing Equity in Global Health Research project funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research. 

Dr. teaches courses on social determinants of health, mental illness and healing across cultures, and global health, while supervising students exploring topics at the intersections of health, bodies, moral worlds, equity, and social change.
