BIO
Dr. Art Poon is Assistant Professor in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a researcher in viral evolution.
Dr. Poon came to Western University from the University of British Columbia where he was an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and an Associate Research Scientist in Bioinformatics at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. He has 52 peer-reviewed publications and holds a New Investigator award (2013) from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). He is also a Career Investigator award recipient (2012) from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research.
Dr. Poon has been studying the evolution of viruses by applying methods in bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and machine learning. In collaboration with Dr. Eric Arts (Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Western University), he studies evolution of HIV and hepatitis C viruses using phylogenetic approaches. Dr. Poon is also engaged in the One Health undergraduate program and will help to coordinate a new graduate program in Medical Bioinformatics.
