Dr. Kun Ping Lu received his MD from Fujian Medical University, PhD from Duke University with Dr. Anthony Means, and Postdoctoral training from Salk Institute with Dr. Tony Hunter, before joining Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as an Associate Physician in 1996. He rose through the ranks as a tenured full Professor at Harvard in 2008, the Founding Division Chief and Founding Program Director of Translational Therapeutics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2014, and an Associate Member at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in 2017. Since 2022, Dr. Lu has joined Western University as a Professor and Western Research Chair in Biotherapeutics to provide leadership in discovering and developing innovative, first-in-class biotherapeutics and biodiagnostics. He has earned many awards, including elections to the Association of American Physicians, and to the AAAS Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In long-term collaboration with Dr. Xiao Zhen Zhou, Dr. Lu has discovered Pin1-catalyzed cis-trans proline isomerization as a unique signaling mechanism regulating protein conformation and function after phosphorylation. Importantly, aberrant conformational changes due to the dysregulation of Pin1 can have the opposite effect on cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, major age-related diseases, but can be effectively targeted by Pin1 inhibitors and/or stereo-specific antibodies. Dr. Lu and Dr. Zhou’s current interests are to further develop their novel Pin1-targeted therapeutics and diagnostics and translate them to the clinic for early diagnosis and treatment of major age-related diseases notably cancer, dementia and sepsis.
