I develop inorganic solid-state functional materials and use advanced characterization to understand, optimize, and accelerate their development for real-world applications. My research integrates materials synthesis, optical spectroscopy, and advanced X-ray techniques to establish the relationships between materials’ morphology, composition, structure, and their functional properties.

A distinguishing feature of my research program is the integration of advanced inorganic materials and nanomaterials synthesis with expertise in synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy. This combination enables both the development of new functional materials and a mechanistic understanding of why materials succeed or fail, providing scientific insights that guide the next generation of materials design.

My laboratory provides in-house capabilities for inorganic materials synthesis, optical spectroscopy, and lab-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy for electronic structure characterization.  To complement these capabilities, I also use specialized infrastructure at external facilities, including Surface Science Western and the Canadian Light Source, for advanced characterization and application-specific studies. This collaborative approach enables research projects that integrate diverse expertise and instrumentation beyond the capabilities of a single laboratory.

I welcome collaborations with industrial partners interested in developing novel functional materials, improving product performance, understanding material degradation, or addressing challenging materials characterization problems.
