Associate Professor Silvia Penuela conducts research in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Western University. Her scholarly work emphasizes pannexins, melanoma, and cancer biology, particularly how cell surface channels regulate tumor progression and metastasis. She investigates the role of pannexin proteins as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in various cancers. Holding a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Minnesota, she is cross-appointed to the Department of Oncology and is a member of the Bone and Joint Institute. She supervises graduate students in the field of cell biology and is currently available for doctoral mentorship and academic consultation for new researchers.
