Dr. Amit Garg is a world-renowned nephrologist and clinician-scientist. He is a Professor with the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology and Biostatistics and holds the endowed Dr. Adam Linton Chair in Kidney Health Analytics at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. Dr Garg serves as the Medical Director for the Living Kidney Donor Program at London Health Sciences Centre and the Site Director for the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) at Western.

Dr. Garg’s research is focused on improving health outcomes for patients with kidney disease, from early diagnosis to treatment. His recent work includes recommendations for improving the evaluation and screening process for living kidney donors and transplant recipients; a study that found a common muscle relaxant may cause severe side effects among patients with low kidney function; and a new surgical method to reduce the need for blood transfusions among patients with kidney injury.

Through his work, he is developing streamlined, innovative approaches to clinical trials and leveraging big data resources and artificial intelligence.

“Now we conduct research not in a bubble, but with patients, health care administrators, scientists and health professionals as full partners,” said Dr. Garg. “We figure out the most important things to study and we study them effectively to have the biggest impact possible.”

 Dr. Garg has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications, including collaborations with more than 1,000 international researchers. He has received several national and international honours, including the 2021 Kidney Foundation of Canada Medal of Research Excellence and the 2021 Hellmuth Prize from Western University.
