Dr. Brian Yan is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Western University. He completed his MD at the University of Calgary, Internal Medicine residency at Western University, and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Calgary. Dr. Yan received a CIHR Clinical Fellowship to train in Advanced Endoscopy at Stanford University. He then returned to the University of Calgary as part of the Therapeutic Endoscopy team. Dr. Yan joined the Division of Gastroenterology at Western University in 2010 and is currently the Citywide Medical Director of Endoscopy. He previously served as the Regional Colonoscopy Lead for the Southwest Regional Cancer Program, Cancer Care Ontario from 2012 to 2019.
Dr. Yan is involved in post graduate education within the Department of Medicine and Division of Gastroenterology. He developed and co-chairs the Course for Residents in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy (CREATE), an innovative hands on therapeutic endoscopy course for senior gastroenterology fellows. He is currently the chair of the Division of Gastroenterology Competence Based Medical Education (CBME) Committee, member of the Department of Medicine CBME Committee, and sits on the Western University CBME Steering Committee. Dr. Yan is a member of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) Education Committee and serves as the Chair of the Maintenance of Competence subcommittee.
Dr. Yan was awarded the Department of Medicine Excellence in Administration Award in 2016, CAG Fellowship in 2020, and the CAG Excellence in Education Award in 2021. His research interests include endoscopic ultrasound, quality in colonoscopy, imaging in inflammatory bowel disease, and general endoscopy.
